Preventing Homelessness With Food
The HOY South Bay Outreach performs its mission through the hard work and dedication of a small number of employees and a large group of volunteers. Many of our volunteers are clients in our programs and they support the charity’s operations by donating their time and talent. We estimate over 1,700 people are served by our programs each month. Each of our programs is structured to help prevent the tragedy that is homelessness. The working poor are extremely vulnerable to financial disaster because of employment interruptions and illness. When take-home pay is decreased or illness causes unforeseen medical expenses, the money used to make ends meet usually comes from rent reserves. Getting behind on rent payments is a slippery slope toward homelessness.
Donations for the Food Outreach Program are provided 6 days a week by our generous sponsors. The food is removed from their shelves because it has reached its sell by date. Rather than waste these food resources, the sponsors provide this bounty for redistribution to those in need. The food that is given to HOY South Bay Outreach in the morning is distributed to our clients in the afternoon. We ask our generous donors and members of the community to patronize these marvelous sponsors.
Last year our amazing sponsors donated food and merchandise valued at over $2,707,333
